The story behind Klipdrift

Klipdrift, affectionately known as “Klippies”, is more than just a brandy: it’s a legacy. Its story begins in 1938 in the heart of Robertson, a fertile valley in the Western Cape of South Africa.

The man behind the brand was JP Marais, a farmer with a passion for crafting exceptional brandy. On the 4th of May 1938, after years of meticulous distilling and blending, he wrote in his journal:

“This day, distilled for the first time a true South African brandy.”

From that moment, Klipdrift was born.

What sets Klipdrift apart is its traditional potstill method and the use of the finest grapes from the Western Cape. It’s aged in French oak barrels, which give it its warm amber color and rich, fruity notes with a hint of spice.

Over the decades, Klipdrift has become a national treasure in South Africa, a drink of celebration, connection, and heritage. And now, it’s made its way into our hearts and glasses here at De Oude Tol.
